California Coast, Rocky Reefs

California Coast, Rocky Reefs

The Rocky Reefs exhibit in the aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences establishes a sense of place —the cold, underwater and craggy coastline of California. In collaboration with the in-house exhibits team, we designed wall graphics and updated graphic templates for the focus panels, digital animal IDs, and printed fish ID cards. We also created a video game about tidepooling and updated the aquarium’s wayfinding system. For the environmental graphics, I illustrated abstract rock formations that climb the walls.

Animal Attraction

Animal Attraction

For this exhibition about wild and flamboyant mating strategies in the animal kingdom, we worked with local illustrators, Lab Partners, to develop a system of illustrations for the threshold/portals and wall graphics. We produced graphic panels, environmental graphics, and worked with our in-house UX designer on the typography for the interactive animal id labels (on the iPad screens at every tank). Also, I did the photo research for this exhibition...which as proven to be memorable.

Built for Speed

Built for Speed

Built for Speed was designed to give our visitors the sense of being underwater with the fastest fish and boats in and on the sea. Using one typeface, Whitney, we developed an extensive system of typographic hierarchies for the graphic panels and surrounding environmental treatments. I saw this project through production to its completion in the Academy’s central Piazza space.

Working closely with Allison Smith, chair of the sculpture program at CCA, I designed the Sculpture Program’s movable identity system to evoke energy, humor and precariousness. Every semester we make posters, handbills and web flyers for events and lectures.

Blockbuster

Blockbuster

During my internship at Stripe SF, I worked with Jon Sueda and Megan Lynch to create graphics for Blockbuster, an exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Monterrey, Mexico, about visual art inspired by cinema. The graphics were created by appropriating lettering and illustrations found in 1940’s era Mexican movie posters. The alphabet we drew and the illustrations we created were used in exhibition graphics, print materials (including billboards and bus shelter posters), and an exhibition catalog.
